A well known music educator, Allen was an organ scholar at Christ College, Cambridge.
He served as organist at St. Asaph’s and Ely Cathedral (1898–1901) and New College, Oxford (1901–18).
He became conductor of the London Bach Choir in 1907, and helped direct the Leeds Festival in 1913.
He became director of the Royal College of Music in 1918, and was knighted in 1920.
