Lewis was the youngest child of Lewis Amis and Louisa Yeomans Johnson, and husband of Agnes Jane Fulton (married 1884).
He graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1878, and in October that year joined the Tennessee Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
He was assistant secretary of the Tennessee Methodist Conference (1880–95), and secretary from 1895 until his death.
He filled many appointments, and was serving as pastor in Pulaski, Tennessee, when he died.
