Amps was educated at Peterhouse, Cambridge (BA 1858, MA 1862).
He played the organ at the College for some time, and at King’s College (1855–76) and Christ’s College.
He conducted the Cambridge University Musical Society for many years, and was known as a composer of pianoforte sonatas and part songs.
