Lancelot was the son of Thomas Andrews and Johane Belson.
He held a number of high positions in the Anglican church during the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I. Among other posts, he served as Bishop of Chichester, of Ely, Winchester and Chichester.
A noted scholar, Andrewes oversaw the translation of the King James Version of the Bible.
