Biography

Armes was a cho­ris­ter un­der Ze­cha­ri­ah Buck at Nor­wich, and at Ro­ches­ter Ca­thed­ral un­der J. L. Hop­kins.

He went on to stu­dy at Ox­ford Uni­ver­si­ty (MusB 1848, MusD 1864).

He played the or­gan at Tri­ni­ty Church, Mil­ton, Graves­end, Kent (1854); St. An­drew’s, Wells Street (1857); Chi­ches­ter Ca­thed­ral (1861); and Dur­ham Ca­thed­ral (1862–1907).

He was al­so the first pro­fess­or of mu­sic at Dur­ham Uni­ver­si­ty (1897).
