Biography

Charles was the son of John Will­iam Ast­ley of Du­kin­field, Che­shire.

He was edu­cat­ed at Je­sus Col­lege, Ox­ford (of which he was a Schol­ar; BA 1847, MA 1849).

Taking Ho­ly Or­ders in 1849, he was Ev­en­ing Lec­tur­er, Bi­de­ford, 1849; in­cum­bent of Hol­well, Ox­ford­shire (1850–54); vi­car of Mar­gate, Kent (1854–64); rec­tor of Bras­ted, Sevenoaks, Kent (1864–78); and min­is­ter of a Pres­by­ter­ian con­gre­ga­tion at Llan­dud­no, Wales (1879).
