Baker was a chorister in Winchester Cathedral for seven years, part of which time Samuel Wesley was the organist.
He studied harmony under Frederick Iliffe, and went on to play the organ at Christ Church, Sandown, Isle of Wight (1864–72), then at St. Saviour’s, Shanklin, Isle of Wight, for almost three decades.
