Biography

Mary was the daugh­ter of Jo­shua Bak­er and Ca­ther­ine Ed­dy.

A Bap­tist, lived with her sis­ter in Chi­ca­go, Il­li­nois, and was ac­tive in the tem­per­ance move­ment. She wrote a num­ber of hymns and tem­per­ance songs.

She worked as a type­set­ter at a print­ing com­pa­ny un­til the Great Chi­ca­go Fire of 1871. The fire de­stroyed much of the city, in­clud­ing the build­ing where she worked.
