In the secular world, Barnaby is best remembered as Chief Constructor (naval architect) of Britain’s Royal Navy (1872–85).
He was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1876 and a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in 1885, the year he retired because of ill health.
Barnaby was interested in Christian education for many years. He was superintendent of the Baptist Sunday School in Lee, Kent, and wrote several hymns for use there.
