Anderson was the son of Thomas James Baten. He married twice: to Clarissa Emily Williams (1877) and Leta Belle Ely (1895).
He served as pastor of the First Baptist Church, Navasota, Texas, and the Broadway Baptist Church, Fort Worth, Texas.
For a while he was Acting President of Howard Payne University.
