A page in the chapel of Charles X in his early years, Batiste began studying at the Imperial Conservatory in 1830.
While there, he won prizes in solfeggio, harmony and accompaniment, counterpoint and fugue, and organ. In 1840, he won the Prix de Rome (with François Bazin).
In 1842, Batiste became organist at St. Nicolas des Champs church in Paris, where he served 12 years.
He then became organist at Saint Eustache Church. In April 1855, while at Saint Eustache, he played the organ in the premiere of Hector Berlioz’ Te Deum, conducted by Berlioz.
