James was the son of Peter J. Batten and Martha C. Hoffman. He married twice: to Julia H. Sharp (1890) and Carrie Lufburrow Davidson (1898).
He served pastorates at the West Grove Methodist Church in Asbury Park, the Matawan Methodist Church, and other Methodist churches in New Jersey and Illinois. He also served as president of the Epworth League of New Jersey.
He later moved from Methodism to the Congregational denomination.
In addition to pastoral work, Batten was a well known speaker on the Chautauqua circuit.
