Biography

James was the son of Pe­ter J. Bat­ten and Mar­tha C. Hoff­man. He mar­ried twice: to Ju­lia H. Sharp (1890) and Car­rie Luf­bur­row Dav­id­son (1898).

He served pas­tor­ates at the West Grove Me­tho­dist Church in As­bury Park, the Ma­ta­wan Me­tho­dist Church, and oth­er Me­tho­dist church­es in New Jer­sey and Il­li­nois. He al­so served as pre­si­dent of the Ep­worth League of New Jer­sey.

He lat­er moved from Me­thod­ism to the Con­gre­ga­tion­al de­no­mi­na­tion.

In ad­di­tion to pas­tor­al work, Bat­ten was a well known speak­er on the Chau­tau­qua cir­cuit.
