Biography

Jabez was the son of Jo­seph Bick­er­ton and Han­nah Tay­lor, and hus­band of Ra­chel E. Bick­er­ton.

He em­ig­rated with his fa­mi­ly from Eng­land to Am­eri­ca at age 12.

He at­tend­ed Drew Se­mi­na­ry, Ma­di­son, New Jer­sey, and be­came a Me­tho­dist Epis­co­pal min­is­ter.

Joining the church’s Phi­la­del­phia Con­fer­ence, he served as a pas­tor; Pre­sid­ing El­der of the con­fer­ence’s West District (1901–06); and sec­re­ta­ry of the Ci­ty Mis­sion­ary So­ci­ety (1906–16).

He was a de­le­gate to the Me­tho­dist Ge­ne­ral Con­fer­ence in 1904, 1908 and 1916, and was a found­ing mem­ber of the Phi­la­del­phia Fe­de­ra­tion of Church­es.

Ursinus Col­lege, Col­lege­ville, Penn­syl­van­ia, gave him an hon­or­ary doc­tor­al de­gree.
