Blackie was educated at Marischal College, Aberdeen, Scotland, and the University of Edinburgh. After studying in Göttingen, Berlin, and Rome, Blackie became a lawyer in 1834.
In 1839, he became Professor of Humanity at Marischal College; in 1841, Professor of Latin at Marischal; and in 1850 Professor of Greek at the University of Edinburgh.
