Birgitte was the daughter of royal hunting official Jens Johansen and Dorthe Henriksdatter. She married twice: to forest manager Herman Michelsen Herz (1763), and to customs inspector and judicial adviser Hans Boye (1778).
As a hymnist, she was involved with Guldbergs og Harboes Psalmebog (Ove Guldberg’s and Ludvig Harboe’s Psalter), to which she contributed 146 hymns.
She wrote a number of plays, including Melicerte (1780) and Gorm den gamle, et heroisk Sørgespil (Gorm the Old: A Heroic Tragedy, 1781).
She also produced national dramatic writing.
