Brettell was the son of a Unitarian minister.
In 1814, he became pastor of a Unitarian congregation at Cockey Moor (now Ainsworth), Bolton, Lancashire.
In 1816, he became pastor of a congregation in Rotherham, Yorkshire, where he stayed until retiring in 1859.
In addition to minor pieces in newspapers, Brettell contributed 16 hymns to John Relly Beard’s Collection of Hymns for Public and Private Worship (London: John Green, 1837).
