Biography

John was the son of Mat­thew Hen­ry Buck­ham and Eli­za­beth Ann Wright, and hus­band of Hel­en Eli­za­beth Will­ard.

He at­tend­ed the Uni­ver­si­ty of Ver­mont (AB 1885, hon­or­ary DD 1904) and An­do­ver New­ton Theo­lo­gic­al School, New­ton, Mas­sa­chu­setts (now part of Yale Di­vi­ni­ty School).

After or­di­na­tion in 1888, he served at the Se­cond Church in Con­way, New Hamp­shire, and the Crom­bie Street Church, Sa­lem, Mas­sa­chu­setts (1890–1903).

In 1903 he moved to the Pa­ci­fic School of Re­li­gion, re­tir­ing as pro­fess­or eme­ri­tus in 1937. In 1914, he gave the Na­than­iel W. Tay­lor Lec­tures at Yale Uni­ver­si­ty.
