Daughter of a Bap­tist min­is­ter, But­ler was al­rea­dy con­trib­ut­ing to the Chi­ca­go Week­ly Ma­ga­zine as a teen­ag­er.

As of 1888, she was liv­ing in High­land Park, Il­li­nois.
