Biography

Theobald was the son of John But­ler, 2nd Mar­quess of Or­monde, and Fran­ces Jane Pa­get, and hus­band of An­na­bel­la Gor­don.

He was christ­ened with the name James Theo­bald Ba­got John But­ler. As a young­er son of a mar­quess, he re­ceived the ho­no­ri­fic pre­fix of Lord from birth.

He at­tend­ed Camb­ridge Uni­ver­si­ty, and was or­dained as an Ang­lican dea­con in 1875, and priest in 1880.

He served in va­ri­ous ca­pa­ci­ties, in­clud­ing rec­tor of Crox­ton Ker­r­ial, Lei­ces­ter­shire (1888), and rec­tor of Ul­combe, Kent (1898–1923). Af­ter re­tire­ment, he moved to Bourne­mouth.
