Theobald was the son of John Butler, 2nd Marquess of Ormonde, and Frances Jane Paget, and husband of Annabella Gordon.
He was christened with the name James Theobald Bagot John Butler. As a younger son of a marquess, he received the honorific prefix of Lord from birth.
He attended Cambridge University, and was ordained as an Anglican deacon in 1875, and priest in 1880.
He served in various capacities, including rector of Croxton Kerrial, Leicestershire (1888), and rector of Ulcombe, Kent (1898–1923). After retirement, he moved to Bournemouth.
