Biography

Joseph was the son of Petr and Ma­rie Ča­pek.

He spent his ear­ly child­hood in Vo­tice, where his fa­ther was a di­rec­tor of mu­sic and from whom he re­ceived his first in­struc­tion in play­ing the vio­lin at age five.

He emi­grat­ed to Am­eri­ca at age nine, ar­riv­ing in Port Hu­ron, Mi­chi­gan, Apr­il 15, 1867.

At one time, he was con­cert mas­ter of the Bos­ton Sym­pho­ny Orc­hes­tra.
