Joseph was the son of Petr and Marie Čapek.
He spent his early childhood in Votice, where his father was a director of music
and from whom he received his first instruction in playing the violin at age five.
He emigrated to America at age nine, arriving in Port Huron, Michigan, April 15, 1867.
At one time, he was concert master of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
