Clayton worked as a missionary in England before moving to America in 1840.
He was city treasurer in Nauvoo, Illinois; clerk of the Nauvoo Temple; member of the Nauvoo Brass Band; Joseph Smith’s private secretary until 1844; and one of the group that moved to Utah with Mormon leader Brigham Young.
He later played second violin in the Salt Lake Theater orchestra.
