Biography

Clayton worked as a mis­sion­ary in Eng­land be­fore mov­ing to Am­eri­ca in 1840.

He was ci­ty trea­sur­er in Nau­voo, Il­li­nois; clerk of the Nau­voo Tem­ple; mem­ber of the Nau­voo Brass Band; Jo­seph Smith’s pri­vate sec­re­ta­ry un­til 1844; and one of the group that moved to Utah with Mor­mon lead­er Brig­ham Young.

He lat­er played se­cond vio­lin in the Salt Lake Thea­ter or­ches­tra.
