Born: June 1, 1862, Middleport, Ohio.
William was the son of Silas Pritton Coe and Sophronia Woodward.
He was educated at Marietta College, Ohio (1883), and McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, Illinois.
Ordained by the Presbytery of Bloomington in 1889, he served in Wenona, Illinois (1889–92); Seattle, Washington (1892–93); Cory, Pennsylvania (1893–1900); and as assistant pastor at the Madison Square Presbyterian Church, New York City (1900–05).
He edited the Bible Record (1905–06) and the Northfield Press, Northfield, Massachusetts (1909).
