After serving in the American civil war, Coppage moved to Fountain County, Indiana, in 1875.
He taught school in Hillsboro and Ladoga, and finally settled in Crawfordsville.
He opened a law office and was a practicing attorney for many years. He often spent winters in Florida.
Coppage was familiar with ecclesiastical law and wrote books on the topic.
