Biography

Cross was the son of Me­thod­ist Epis­co­pal min­is­ter Aar­on Cross of the Rock Riv­er Con­fer­ence, Il­li­nois, and Ma­ry Jane Rose.

Admitted to the Ca­li­for­nia Con­fer­ence in 1890, he joined the fa­cul­ty of the Uni­vers­ity of the Pa­ci­fic, Stock­ton, Ca­li­for­nia, in 1891, ev­en­tu­al­ly be­com­ing its act­ing pre­si­dent and vice-pre­si­dent.

He was al­so known as a lin­guist and mu­si­cian.
