Menzies was the youngest of 15 children born to John Cummings and Elizabeth Stupard, and husband of Louisa Payne Allison.
He emigrated to America in 1869, and settled in Georgia, first at Augusta, and later at Bainbridge.
In 1874, he moved to Bremond, Texas, where he was a photographer for several years.
After that he founded a weekly newspaper, the Democrat, in Corsicana, Texas, and organized the first lodge of Oddfellows in that city, of which he became grand master.
The Dallas City Directory for 1894 lists him as a music teacher.
If you know where to get a good photo of Cumming (head & shoulders, at least 200×300 pixels),
