James was the son of Thomas Darlington and Hannah Anne Goodliffe, and husband of Ella Louise Beams (married July 26, 1886, Cathedral of the Incarnation, Garden City, Long Island, New York.
He was educated at New York University (BA 1877); Princeton Seminary (graduated 1880, PhD 1884, DD 1895); St. John’s College, Annapolis, Maryland (LLD 1905); and Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania (LLD 1907).
He became an Episcopal deacon January 25, 1882, and was ordained a priest by Bishop Littlejohn November 26 that year. In 1905, he was elected first bishop of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
