Biography

James was the son of Tho­mas Dar­ling­ton and Han­nah Anne Goodl­iffe, and hus­band of Ella Lou­ise Beams (mar­ried July 26, 1886, Ca­thed­ral of the In­car­na­tion, Gar­den Ci­ty, Long Is­land, New York.

He was edu­cat­ed at New York Uni­ver­si­ty (BA 1877); Prince­ton Se­mi­na­ry (gra­du­at­ed 1880, PhD 1884, DD 1895); St. John’s Col­lege, An­na­po­lis, Ma­ry­land (LLD 1905); and Dick­in­son Col­lege, Car­lisle, Pennsylvania (LLD 1907).

He be­came an Epis­co­pal dea­con Jan­ua­ry 25, 1882, and was or­dained a priest by Bi­shop Lit­tle­john No­vem­ber 26 that year. In 1905, he was elect­ed first bi­shop of Har­ris­burg, Penn­sy­lvan­ia
