Deiss attended the Gregorian University in Rome, and entered the Congregation of the Holy Spirit in 1942.
For a while he was a professor of Holy Scripture at a seminary in Brazzaville, Congo. Returning to France for health reasons in 1948, he taught at the seminary of Chevilly-Larue.
He is said to have composed over 400 hymns. Some of his compositions sold over five million copies.
