Santeüil was for ma­ny years a se­cu­lar ec­cle­si­as­tic at the Se­mi­na­ry of St. Ma­gloire.

The Arch­bi­shop of Pa­ris, de­sir­ing to re­form the Pa­ris Bre­vi­ary, charged him with com­pos­ing the new hymns. He en­list­ed the help of his bro­ther Jean, who did the ma­jor part of the work.
