Dexter graduated from Yale University (1840) and Andover Theological Seminary (1844), and was a leading authority on the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony.
A member of the North Congregational Church in New Bedford, Massachusetts, he commuted to Boston, where he edited The Congregationalist magazine.
