Di Ca­pua stu­died mu­sic at the Conservatorio di Mu­si­ca San Pietro a Majella in Na­ples.

He start­ed com­pos­ing his most fa­mous song, O So­le Mio (co-writ­ten with It­al­ian po­et Gio­van­ni Ca­pur­ro), while on a trip to Ode­ssa, Rus­sia (now in the Ukraine).
