Menno was the son of Henry Jacob Diehl and Eleonora Bertles, and husband of Emma Jane Cronover (married 1886).
He matriculated at Pennington Seminary, Pennington, New Jersey, in 1878. After finishing his studies at Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, he taught at Pennington Seminary (1885–86).
In 1886, he joined the Detroit Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. As of 1892, he was serving in North Hope, Michigan.
Around 1893, when Emma’s health began to fail, they moved to New Jersey, then Florida, hoping a change in climate would help. Emma died in Gainesville, Florida, the day before Christmas, 1894.
