A Baptist minister, John was the father of Reverend George Thomas Dowling. He married twice: His first wife died of cholera, and he later married Maria S. Perkins.
Educated in England, he received a Doctor of Divinity degree from Transylvania University, Lexington, Kentucky, in 1846.
He served pastorates in Catskill, New York (1832–34); Newport, Rhode Island (1834–36); New York City (1844–52 & 1856–68); Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1852–56); and Newark, New Jersey.
