John was the son of James R. Driver and Matilda C. Allen, and husband of Elzire Louise Wiley (married 1888).
He attended the Illinois Agricultural College and Boston University.
He was ordained a Methodist Episcopal minister and served in Prairie, Illinois (as of 1880), and at the People’s Church, Chicago, Illinois (1902–07).
He traveled extensively in Europe, and was a lecturer, orator, writer, and member of the American & Asiatic Archaeological Society.
