David was the son of James Rutherford Drummond of Stragreath, Perthshire, Scotland.
After studying at the University of Edinburgh, Drummond went to Oxford, where he graduated BA.
He was ordained a priest in 1831, and, after serving at various locations, became, in 1838, joint minister of Trinity Episcopal Church, Dean Bridge, Edinburgh.
He resigned his charge and severed his connection with the Scottish Episcopal Church in 1843, when he became minister of a church built for him (St. Thomas’ English Episcopal Church, Edinburgh), where he continued to minister to a large congregation until his death.
Several of his hymns appeared in the 1838 Church of England Hymnbook, which he jointly edited with Robert K. Greville, a member of his congregation.
