William was the son of William Drummond, a naval surgeon, and Rose Hare.
He married twice: to Barbara Tomb and Catherine Blackley. He lost his father (who had just opened a practice in Ballyclare) in infancy.
He was educated for the ministry at the University of Glasgow. In 1793, he became pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church in Belfast, and in 1816, of the Strand Street Church in Dublin.
