John was the son of Timothy Dwight (Julian, p. 1560).
He graduated from Harvard (1832) and the Cambridge Theological College. He became pastor of the Unitarian church in Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1840, then helped found the Brook Farm Community.
He returned to Boston in 1848, and began devoting himself to literary work. He edited Dwight’s Journal of Music, 1852–81.
