Samuel was the son of James Dyer and Sarah Barton, and husband of Renee Novak.
The family originally lived in White Chapel, Hampshire England. Hustad gives Samuel’s birthplace as Wellshire (location uncertain–Wiltshire?), where James was ordained and served as a Baptist minister.
In 1806, the Dyers moved to Coventry, and in 1811, Samuel emigrated to America.
He taught music and directed choirs in New York City and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He later moved to Baltimore, Maryland, and wrote, and conducted singing schools in the south and east, and the New York Sacred Music Society.
