Born: Sep­tem­ber 26, 1797, Lon­don, Eng­land (Ju­li­an) or New York Ci­ty (Gris­wold).

Died: De­cem­ber 2, 1819, at sea, en route to the Ca­na­ry Is­lands.

Biography

James was the son of a New York book­sel­ler, and bro­ther to the bi­shop of Mas­sa­chu­setts.

The fa­mi­ly moved to New York in 1803, and James was edu­cat­ed at Co­lum­bia Col­lege (gra­du­at­ed 1816).

Taking Ho­ly Or­ders in 1818, he be­came rec­tor at Ac­co­mack, Vir­gin­ia, where his abun­dant and suc­cess­ful la­bors were cut short by an ear­ly death.
