Born: September 26, 1797, London, England (Julian) or New York City (Griswold).
Died: December 2, 1819, at sea, en route to the Canary Islands.
James was the son of a New York bookseller, and brother to the bishop of Massachusetts.
The family moved to New York in 1803, and James was educated at Columbia College (graduated 1816).
Taking Holy Orders in 1818, he became rector at Accomack, Virginia, where his abundant and successful
labors were cut short by an early death.
