Eschenburg is remembered as a critic, literary historian, and poet, and for his efforts to popularize English literature in Germany.
He was educated at the University of Leipzig and University of Göttingen.
In 1767, he became a tutor, and later professor, at the Collegium Carolinum in Brunswick (now known as the Technische Universität Braunschweig).
