Biography

A physician, poet, musician, and journalist, Evans married in 1876.

Two years later, during the yellow fever epidemic of 1878, he voluntarily put himself in harm’s way, serving as a hospital physician.

He went on to become the southern editor for the St. Louis Medical Journal (1884–85) and contributed to the Waverly Magazine, the Indianapolis Sun, and other periodicals. He is also remembered as the author of numerous humorous articles.

At one time, American president James Garfield offered to make him American consul in Cologne, Germany, but he declined.
