Appointed superintendent of the Sunday School at Tenth Baptist Church, Philadelphia, in 1854. Under his direction, the Sunday School became the first in that city to make music a prominent feature of its activities.
In 1872, he was elected President of the Baptist Sunday School Association of Philadelphia.
