Biography

George was the son of An­drew Jack­son Fenn and Eli­za­beth Call­a­han. He moved to Texas with his par­ents in 1869. He seems to have mar­ried Lot­tie Lou­el­la Bell, prob­ab­ly af­ter 1914. They were liv­ing in Bow­ie, Texas, in 1920.

He be­gan stu­dy­ing mu­sic when quite young, and start­ed teach­ing sing­ing schools in 1883. He at­tend­ed a nor­mal taught by Ru­fus Cor­ne­li­us in 1900; the Eu­re­ka Nor­mal, En­ter­prise, In­di­an Ter­ri­to­ry (now Ok­la­ho­ma); and three ses­sions of An­th­ony Sho­wal­ter’s Sou­thern Nor­mal Mu­sic In­sti­tute: Al­vord, Texas, 1902; Ste­phen­ville, Tex­as, 1901; and Thors­by, Ala­ba­ma, 1903.

His first pub­lished Gos­pel song was The Glo­ri­ous Mar­riage Sup­per of the Lamb.
