Theodore was the son of Walter Andrew Ferris and Eva R. Parker.
He was educated at Harvard University (AB 1929) and the General Theological Seminary (GTS), New York City (BD 1933).
Ferris was ordained an Episcopal deacon in 1933, and priest the next year.
He taught at the GTS; was assistant rector at Grace Church, New York City (1933–37); rector of Emmanuel Church, Baltimore, Maryland (1937–42); and rector of Trinity Church, Boston, Massachusetts (1942–72).
From 1943–64, he was an adjunct instructor in homiletics at the Episcopal Theological School, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
