Arthur was the son of Caleb Foote and Mary Wilder White, brother of Henry Wilder Foote, and husband of Kate N. Knowlton.
Educated at Harvard University, he played the organ at the First Church (Unitarian) in Boston for 32 years, starting in 1878.
Foote was a founding member of the American Guild of Organists, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
