Son of a Congregational minister, Ford entered Wymondley College, Little Wymondley, Hertfordshire, in 1816. The school moved to Byng Place, London, in 1833, where it became known as Coward College.
He served as pastor of the Congregational Church at Lymington, Hampshire (1821); Traveling Secretary to the Congregational Union (1841); and pastor of Greensgate Chapel, Salford, Manchester (1843).
