Harry was the son of Frank Sheldon Fosdick and Amie Weaver, and husband of Florence Allen Whitney.
He attended Colgate University, Union Theological Seminary (UTS), and Columbia University.
Ordained in 1903, he pastored at the First Baptist Church in Montclair, New Jersey (1904–15).
At UTS, he lectured on Baptist principles and homiletics (1908–15) and was professor of practical theology (1915–46).
He also found time to serve as associate minister at the First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, New York (1919–25), and pastor of Park Avenue Baptist Church (later renamed to Riverside Church) (1929–46).
His picture was on the cover of Time magazine, September 21, 1925.
