Biography

William was the son of Caleb Gage and Susan Claggett, and husband of Nellie Lydia Jones.

By age 20, Gage was foreman for the Review and Herald press. Around 1870, moved to Manchester, New Hampshire, where he became press foreman for the Daily Mirror and American newspaper.

In 1878, He and his wife returned to Battle Creek, and he resumed working for the Review and Herald. He later left the Review and Herald and set up his own company, William C. Gage and Son, Printers, in Battle Creek.

In 1881, Gage was ordained to the Gospel ministry. The next year, he was elected to the Battle Creek school board, and the Battle Creek Board of Public Works. He went on to serve as mayor of Battle Creek, 1882–83.
