Born: Au­gust 26, 1874, Port­age, Wis­con­sin.

Died: De­cem­ber 27, 1938, Pas­sa­vant Hos­pi­tal (now North­west­ern Me­mo­ri­al Hos­pi­tal), Chi­ca­go, Il­li­nois, of pneu­mo­nia.

Buried: Sil­ver Lake Ce­me­te­ry, Por­tage, Wis­con­sin.

Zona was the daugh­ter of Charles Frank­lin Gale and Eli­za J. Beers, and wife of Will­iam Llew­el­lyn Breese (mar­ried 1928).

She was edu­cat­ed at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Wis­con­sin-Ma­dis­on (Mas­ters in Li­ter­ature, 1899). She then spent six years as a jour­nal­ist in Milwaukee and New York.

She is best re­mem­bered as a no­vel­ist, play­wright, and short sto­ry writ­er. She was the first wo­man to win the Pul­itz­er Prize for Dra­ma af­ter adapt­ing her no­vel Miss Lu­lu Bett for a play that op­ened on Broad­way on De­cem­ber 27, 1920. Cla­ra Be­rang­er adapt­ed the book for a si­lent film of the same name in 1921.
