1871–1963
Margueritte Bixler Garrett

Introduction

Born: July 27, 1871, Hartsville, Ohio.

Died: September 19, 1963.

Buried: Fairview Cemetery, Bluffton, Indiana.

Marguerite was the wife of Orin David Garrett (married June 1908). Note: Some sources spell her given name as Margueritte, but her tombstone and biography use only one ’T’.

While living near Akron, Ohio, she came to Christ after hearing sermons by Elder E. D. Parker.

She was head of the music department at Mt. Morris College, Illinois, for three years, and in 1895, became the first music director at Manchester College, Indiana (now Manchester University).

She visited the Holy Land in 1906, which provided inspiration for some of her songs.

“I cannot say when I first began to sing. I know my heart has always been full of song, and had it not been for this ‘bubbling over’ outlet it would have burst long ago.

“I never intend to quit. In fact, this little life of mine is just a getting ready time for a sweeter songship after while.”
