When Gibbs was around three years old, his family moved to South Africa, and he grew up in Roodeport, near Johannesburg.
In World War I, he served as a chaplain in military training camps.
After the war, he went to the Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, Illinois, and there became involved with rescue missions.
